I look forward to Friday, I link up with http://littlesproutbooks.blogspot.com when I can share with you what theme... or animal.. my son is obsessed with this week.. and it's ....
Coyotes and more coyotes..
Yes, he still loves ponds and he just got a new turtle.. but he is interested in Coyotes right now..
I believe it began when I read him the Weekend Program event at the Hudson Highlands called Coyotes:
"Seldom seen and often misunderstood, coyotes are fascinating animals! Join us for an indoor presentation where you will learn to identify their foot print and recognize their call. Make a plaster cast of a coyote track. Then join us for a 1 mile hike in search of coyote signs."
So we got some books out of the library...
Our favorite by far.. because it is so silly and I read it so fast.. is
this story is like the old women who swallowed a fly.. but much funnier.. and dessert animals...are in the mix...
My favorite is Way out in the Desert by T.J. Marsh and Jennifer Ward.. They have a few other books.. one is about a meadow.. and one is about the arctic, the ocean and the garden.
When ever I go exploring in nature or in new books with my son.. I always learn something new... I learned about the Karuk people..The Karuk people are Fix the earth people. They gather each year to clean special ceremonial places, to pray for water food and earth food. Karuok means upstream... they live in California in tribes. They still believe in storytelling and the story Fire Race that is depicted inthe book by Jonathan London.. is one of the stories the children learn in their native language. The story is about a wise coyote who works together with the animals .. to get fire.. from 2 yellow jacket "bees" sisters.
I had to go to another library to get this book.. and my son thought it was also a very funny one....
This is one my son has asked me to buy him... So I know he really liked it...
We also found some fact books about coyotes... that he really enjoyed...
I learned about another tribes called the Potawatomi when we read the book coyote in love with a Star by Marty Kreipe de Montano. The Potawatomi tribe is a version of the Ojibwe word meaning "People of the place of fire".
This story talks about a coyote who leaves his home on a farm and goes to the city.. It talks about the coyote the trickster...Long before television and books children learned by listening and doing.. Storytellers...told about many things.. and one was the coyote the trickster. The stories they believed had the tricksters as heros who may be responsible for creating parts of the world..Different tribes or areas gave the hero's different identies..
Spider was the Sioux
Raven to the Northwest coast
Great lakes area called Hare the hero
the west believed it was the coyote
Gerald McDermott is know for creating books about trickster tales...IF you have never heard of him and you have a child.. please check him out at the library.. Here are a few of his best.. and Mulit-cultural books are important to show your children.. you can learn about different cultures, learn new words... and it's always fun to take them on a "photographic" tour on the internet of towns or places the book is about.
The last one.. is the only one of his books we do not own... but my mother in law owns it...
www.geraldmcdermott.com He does have a great website too!
I am going to list a few of the other books we got from the library by title:
The tale of Rabbit and Coyote by Tony Johnston
Borreguita and the Coyote by Verna Aardema
There is a big Fall festival books for children blog hop going on at:
www.5minutesforbooks.com
go visit them...
See you next Friday
I was a women who emotionally ate through most of my 20's all of my 30's and am now learning how to NOT emotionally eat. I help other women do the same, and in the process we feel connected, needed and happy.

So many cute coyote books! I've only read "Way Out in the Desert" before. I'm looking forward to finding some of the others at our library!
Nothing wrong with liking coyotes! Great photos, too.
Thanks for linking up! I love the real-life coyote pics, and the book covers are adorable too.
It is fun when they have a little obsession to find books that match up to their interests.
