I recently repainted my office (thus reminding myself how much I hate to paint walls) and purchased some new bookshelves. Really changed the look of the room.
And I have an award for you today.
I'm no decorator so I'm no help. It all looks fine to me. I like functional and comfortable. The fishy shower curtain looks kind of cool to me, but yes maybe the plaid window dressing is a little bit weird.

Tossing It Out
In the dining room I would take half the books out of the shelf and use it to display some decorations. Balance it out..put some books standing up and some stacked flat. (Same for reading nook - or get second shelf if it would fit next to first one.)
Then you need something much larger over the mantel. I recently saw a wall clock made out of family pictures (as the numbers) and a clock mechanism you buy at a craft store in the middle.
Finally does that table have a leaf? What would it look like smaller with a runner or some color on it??
Me again.
If you are looking to change up your color scheme......look at blogs you like...most blog backgrounds are colors that coordinate if you find one you like chances are it would look good in a room with maybe just a tad of muting.
(That's all, I promise.)
Now this is a different looking blog and I like it. Hi I'm here from the Tuesday blog hop and your newest follower. Hope you'll stop by blog and follow me too.

What's the matter with your husband's and son's bathroom? I like the fish personally but that's as far as I go with decorating tips. Like the music here...let me go take a second look while the song's on....
Love your blog! Visiting from Follow Me Back Tuesday...I'm now following! I'd love for you to come visit and follow me!

With that said...a coat of paint always changes the whole feel of a room! Good luck on your redecorating project!
Every season I try to update, make a change. I would add a few plants,
and pick a color you love and add
that in pillows, perhaps curtains for a fresh look. A centerpiece for the kitchen table...a wooden bowl with some fruit. Pillows, plants, curtains and a center piece for the table. Sometimes you don't need to buy much, but go in other rooms and borrow items to rearrange.
If the men like the upstairs bathroom, I wouldn't worry about it for now. I would concentrate more on downstairs for the party.
I hope it is a wonderful party!
I agree with Heather.
I have a mirror over my fireplace and I love it!!
Fish shower curtain is good for a 4 year old!!
Good luck!!
Do what you think is best though and what you love! I have a friend that wants me to hang more pictures but I don't want to. I am liking less clutter.
