facebook addict

I went away for 3 weeks this August. IT was a great time to really live in the moment. Before we left for Florida, I realized I was spending to much time on Facebook. A few weeks before we left for Florida, I decided to log in much like a time clock, every time I got on for a few minutes via the phone or to check it on line in the grocery store or to post pictures or to email someone on Facebook and I would log the time in and out. The results were frightening, I was spending between 6 hours and 20 minutes give or take a WEEK on Facebook. This isn't counting any time on my blog, website , pinterest and or twitter accounts. These results were alarming to me, which is why I was determined to change it. My business is based at home, and I use the computer to "see" and speak with some of my clients, the computer is on all day. When I was away I didn't have a computer just my Ipad and I chose not to use it, except to take my Holistic MBA course. In Florida, I really didn't miss the computer. I did text a little but I didn't even check my email daily, and it felt good. The fact of the matter is if I am home working, I check facebook. I noticed one day I refreshed facebook almost 15 times an hour. That is an addict, if I ever saw one. It's a little bit like a drug.

Sometimes when I am reading Facebook I get a great new connection for my buisness or I get a great idea.  My business requires me to network and build a following, BUT my productivity was down due to the fact that I was addicted to social media. I wasn't using good time management.  IT really became a compulsion, that had an ironclad hold on me. I was determined to stop it.

I think many of us long to be a part of something so we try to get that from Facebook.  So we waste our precious time and we think we are connecting with our families by seeing what they did last weekend, instead of calling. We see it on their time line and know what they are up to and SO Facebook keeps me from truly connecting. I am sure for me Self-esteem and a deep rooted need to feed my ego from other peoples positive comments and reinforcement of Facebook  status post or pictures...is what kept me addicted so long. This virtual empathy and good feeling is an online activity that I could be getting and or giving in person. Truth be told sometimes I get really sad by something I read or see on facebook and or jealous and it takes me a while to get back to my positive state.

  What I have learned while being away for 21 days is that I do NOT need to be on Facebook daily. So I won't be deleting my account, because I use it for work but I will be spending more time connecting with people outside of the Internet.

 I recommend checking into Facebook maybe 2 times a day and to keep it to 15 minutes.
You can use a cell phone clock to ring and tell you to step away, from the computer.
