I love Friday because I love to share my ideas... and things I do with my son.... SO we are doing a Pizza UNIT... we made felt bean bags in the shape of pizza.... We did some fraction and number fun... We sang on top of my pizza all covered with cheese... we played pizzaria... I had lots of mini empty pizza boxes.. I got at the resteraunt supply store and we created playdough pizza and wrote down orders with our pads.... and we read a lot.... In the back of the book Pizza at Sally's it had a recipe... so my son and I even made our own pizza shaped like a heart...My favorite book was the Little Red Hen makes a pizza.... it's just a great book especially if your child already knows the little red hen story.
Hi Pizza Man!!! was great and my son loved role playing it... It would be perfect for a toddler.
So without further adoo.. here is my little chef...
Now for the toppings he picked....
Olives, pepperoni, cheese....
We learned alot about toppings from this unit.. Pepperoni is the number one pizza topping in the United States, but people around the world like other foods on top of there pizza/ England top pizza with tuna or corn.
Russians enjoy pizza topped with salmon and onions.
In Brazil pizzas are topped with green peas.
Barbecued chicken is a favorite in the Bahamaas
Australians choose to top their pizza with eggs
Sinapore flavor their beef and chicken toppings with chili flakes or curry powder
India pizzas are topped with pickled ginger.
What is your favorite topping???
We learned some Italian words:
Car- Macchina ( MAH-kee-nah)
ball- Palla (PAHL-lah)
Good Evening- Buona Sera ( Boo-OH-na SEH-rah)
We want to make a pizza Margherita too.. as it is a rectangle pizza... Pizza Margherita was created in the year 1889. It's basil... grated mozzarella cheese.... tomatoes Delicious... for grown ups ... Kids don't love basil...
here are some facts about pizza.. you decide if they are true or false
The first American pizzeria was in Chicago... False( New York)
Tomatoes are a good source of vitamin A and C True
People used to believe tomatoes were poisonous True
An Italian pizza baker is called a pizzaiolo. True
Pizza dough rises because it is made with flour. False (yeast)
Adding pasta to this theme... would be fun too... learning the different kinds of pasta.. and Reading Strega Nona.
Pizza Poetry
Pie, Pie, pizza pie
Choose your toppings,
Pile them high.
Pie, Pie, Pizza pie!!!
There's nothing better,
In any weather,
Than eating pizza pie!!!
two other books we loved were...

Here is the recipe from Sally's pizza book
serving is for 8 kids...
The dough
1 package active dry yeast ( 1 tablespoon)
1 teaspoon sugar
1 1/2 cups warm water
2 teaspoons salt
4 1/2 cups of flour
In a mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast and the sugar in the warm water. Stir in one cup of the flour and the salt. Add the next 3 cups of the four, one cup at a time, mixing well until it is no longer sticky. Knead the dough on a floured surface, until it is smooth and elastic, for 8-10 minutes, working in the remaining last 1/2 cup of flour. Shape the dough into a ball and put it in a lightly oiled bowl, then cover with a cloth or plastic wrap. Let is rise in a warm place for about an hour, until it has doubled in size. Punch it down to get out air bubbles. Divide in two ( or into the number of pizzas you want) Pull and spread out the dough with your hands onto two lightly oiled 12-inch pizza pans or baking sheets.
The topping
1 cup of your favorite tomato sauce
2 cups grated mozzarella cheese
preheat oven to 400 degrees
Spread 1/2 cup tomato sauce on each pizza
add your choice of...mushrooms, peppers, broccoli, onions, herbs etc....
Sprinkle 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese on each pizza
Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
Serve at once!!! Buon appetito!!!
Ciao!!!!!!!

What an awesome unit! Pizza Pat was one of my roommate's son's favorite books. I now read it to the Buddha Bear. He loves pizza so I think that's why he likes it. The recipe from Sally's is similar to the dough I make (we have pizza night once a week), but I do half wheat flour and half regular. My favorite pizza toppings are pesto for the sauce, chunks of cream cheese, mushrooms, artichokes and cashews.
Love this; how fun! Friday night is usually pizza night at our house. When it is cooler, we make our own!
Your chef is adorable!!!
You are a great teacher~

This is absolutely awesome & I could use this in my future classroom!!! I talked about how I love incorporating food in with lessons & books! Thank you so much for posting this!!
That is a fabulous...How clever are you!!!!!! I enjoyed all of those pizza facts too..maybe some fun new ways to try pizza as well!
Thanks for sharing what you learned about other countries’ pizza topping preferences! It sounds like both you and your son learned a lot in your pizza unit! And making pizza together must have been a great activity, especially since research shows that kids who help out in the kitchen are empowered to consider portions and nutrients and learn important skills, such as teamwork, following directions, and math. That’s why I work for The Kids Cook Monday, a new program started by the Healthy Monday campaigns to encourage families to cook and eat meals together. To learn more about the benefits of preparing meals together, check out our website at http://www.healthymonday.org/the-kids-cook-monday/
We’re looking for families to take on the challenge of preparing a meal together each Monday and sharing their experiences on their blogs. If you’re interested in getting involved, please email me at TheKidsCookMonday@gmail.com. Thanks!

Looks like so much fun. What a special treat to get to share it with your son.
Love this! I wish everyone would make more pizza at home...those delivery guys would be out of business!
Happy SITS day!
I taught my cousin last summer how to make a pizza, he was sooo excited because he wants to be a pizza deliverer when he grows up so he can drive, drink soda and eat pizza all day, he is 6 and yes his parents are sooo proud.
Totally going to follow your blog!!! I love this pizza post and I can't wait to do something similar with my 3 year old. I am always looking for new ideas to do with him. Thanks and I love books.
Cute idea to do one whole day of themed activities. How fun!
I love seeing new ways to incorporate learning about different things into one fun activity! I homeschool, and using pizza as a vehicle for learning other stuff is such a great idea!
