SO most teachers don't see their class after around DECEMBER 18th but I am in a private school that is also part daycare so we were open yesterday and since it's non-curriculum I could have some extra fun.
So we used a mailbox worksheet to practice counting 10, 9, 8, 7, 6,5,4,3,2,1 and than we took pictures with the kids and their new years horns that I gave each child. We played what time is it baby new year. It's just like what time is it Mr.Fox if you know that one. If not drop me an email and or comment and I will send you the directions. Then we talked about the words: midnight, resolution, January, countdown, party, etc... they liked the new words. Many of them asked if we could watch the ball drop at school, I said no we won't be here LOL
We made banners that said 2010 and they had to trace large stencils and put the numbers in the correct order. We used bingo markers and cut colored aluminum foil glitter.
I could have done even more but the day went so fast.
Today it is snowing at my home and I am home with my 4 year old alone, so I am going to go on a snowy picnic with him, idea from teaching heart mom (blog) and pack the hot chocolate and marshmallows and take him sledding. When we get home he is going to start making the melting snowman cookies from staceys sweetshop. I hope I can keep him busy. I am a bit broke after the holiday to take him to the movies, and I heard the borders near us was closing, so sad- does that mean people dont' read in my area? I can't go to borders for there great 30-60 percent off sale as I broke today.
Then there is the little matter of the new year tonight? Last year my husband and I stayed home and took goofy pictures and ate king crab leg and steak- we had a great time. This year I was more in the mood to have a couple over, or go to a couple who has kids home and get a movie for the kids and the adults would have a little bubbly- but no one seemed to be financially interested.
I love the idea we did 4 years ago on new years I invited 7 couples and their children, I hired a babysitter for the children and set up a craft and game room, She the sitter, did the crafts they were new years necklaces and painting projects and then games after games they put on pj's and watched the movies. While we the adults ate a 3 course meal I prepared and played a few games including a white elephant game- that year i got a box of mini bottles like the kind you get on a plane. I was actually excited to get it, first they were cute and second I rarely drink. He was happy to recycle it as he does not drink. It was a great night but we have not been able to do it since.
