My family tried to teach me to save, but I just couldn't. Lots of people
have excuses why they can't. I have a savings account- it's a college fund for
my son, but I myself do not have a savings account, When I was a college
student I had a savings account, but I always had to dip in it for car troubles.
Now I go so long without a hair cut, new shoes, eating out etc... that when I get
money I spend it right away, I know bad habit. I was on the linkfeedthepig.com
I learned a lot of tips and I will try to do some of them. I did have fun trying to
identifly what kind of spender I am and it came up as Newbie Nester? what are you?

but I know not for the best... LOL I love books and magazines and I am on a great

So how do you teach children to be pennywise? I have gotten my child in the habit of brushing his teeth and looking both ways before crossing the street- but how do I teach him that saving is important, I have learned that the pre-school years are the best time to teach this. I have started by having him sort change. He still thinks a nickel is more than a dime but hey it's bigger??? While shopping I try to talk to him about how toys or food cost money. I play store at home with old cracker and cereal boxes. He loves this, but what exactly am I teaching him??? Saving has always been easier for me when I had a specific objective in mind, for my son I think that is also true- like a toy out of my price range. I have decided to start him off on a saving journey starting in May. I have labeled three jars to get ready for the task. spending, saving and sharing. I am sure he wont' really catch on until he can add better and that may not be till he is 5 or 6 but I am going to start. I think the hardest thing for me as a child was to differentiate betweeen needs, wants and wishes. We do however, try to put special items on the birthday or holiday list.
I myself will continue on my journey about saving money I have met so many women bloggers who have blogs soley dedicated to saving, and coupons and I am not the best at that, so I am going to really search for people who are, so I can learn from them. One specific person I have learned a lot about is Heather from
gerberdaysblog.com She is very environmentally friendly, and I found a lot of her past posts to be about making your own detergent, using your hubby's old shirts for rags and fabric softener tricks of the trade, she is also very crafty and she made a V neck t-shirt into a stylish shirt using cut material, check it out.
SO if you SPEND and don't SAVE try to think a little differently before you rent that movie, eat out or buy that magazine or nail polish. SECRETLY I wrestle with SAVINGS and I don't want my son to be afraid of the word SO I am going to send him on a Journey and SEE how he does.
The next post will be letter T which is Twenty minute meals which may be very helpful in saving some time and money.

I go back and forth between spending on ridiculous things...like magazines when I have about 50 I have not read and them being really thrifting, going to different grocery stores to save $$$. I use Heathers all-purpose cleaner...IT IS AWESOME!
It took me a LONG time to understand finances! 5 years to be exact. I thought that after I got married, I could keep living the way I grew up. I am finally OKAY with not having everything, not having the best. I've realized that saving, and trying to be more frugal actually makes me happier than my spending days.
I'm glad you are confronting these issues! You will be glad that you did. :)

I try to be economical to a degree. When my daughters were growing up, and would ask for something I could nor afford, I would take out my checkbook and say, "Okay, girls, here is what we have in the bank, and here is what our bills are. As you can see, we just can't afford that thing you want." Consequently, they both became very good managers, and have both been able to save money. They both have families.
Practice certainly helps us to manage.
